Exploring a Cluster Major in Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice

How does this practice/idea reflect Cluster Learning?

This reflects Cluster Learning because social justice is predicated on INTERDISCIPLINARITY and the major will draw from different clusters. It is OPEN because the topic needs to activated by students’ lived experience — this isn’t the type of content that can simply be delivered top-down.

Why did your group choose this idea to feature/explore?

  • We chose this idea because it is timely — our Center for Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice is going to be launched soon and this will support them.

How could you generalize this idea into a practice that is applicable to as many different kinds of participants in the CPLC as possible?

  • This is a Cluster major, so every discipline and professor can contribute courses. We aren’t looking to make more work; we’re looking to NETWORK and STREAMLINE the staff and faculty programs that already exist.

Identify anything that the University or the CoLab could do to help advance or support this practice.

  • We need models for how to make Cluster major and Cluster minors and can draw on IDS as an example.

  • - Consult ideas about Cluster Majors and IDS as a model in Robin's Lightning Talk - The course catalog will be a great resource because people can find existing courses that fit this - Connect with emerging global studies major - Look for opportunities like Orientation and the Student Activities fair to get students involved at the ground level and lay the groundwork before DEI officer arrives NOTE: Our image is an artist who deals with these themes, Jennifer Ling Datchuk. She bridges multiple apects of DEI including race, gender, and disability studies.
