Cluster Pedagogy Learning Community: Season 3

Optional Orientation
May 6 or 10 (choose one)

12:00pm on Zoom
If you cannot attend synchronously on June 14th

We hope that most folks will be with us live on Zoom on June 14th, but if you have other obligations that prevent you from attending, please do the following before then:

  • Create two entries on CPLC B-I-N-G-O, one focusing on a fun fact about you that folks don’t know and the other focusing on something you have discovered recently about teaching or learning.
  • Add an entry or two to this Padlet about Cluster Learning. (You can log in with a free account or use without an account, your choice!)
  • Check in with your Track Leader (use Teams chat!) to make sure you know what you need to do for your specific track.

Session 2

June 14th, 8:30/9:00-12pm

Ambassadors, Storytellers, SLC: 1:00-2:00pm

Design Forward: 1-2:30pm

TWP/INCAP: 2:15-4:15pm

all via Zoom

Weekly Activities until July 13th

Everyone:

All Folks Who Did Not Attend on June 14:

  • To finish out your asynchronous participation for the June CPLC session, connect with someone via Teams chat based on their Bingo pedagogy fact. Send a chat to the CPLC member of your choice and ask a question, offer a reaction– just check in and break the ice on a new chat about teaching!

TWP & INCAP:

  • Read the information literacy OER that Christin Wixson has been working on. Then, either use Hypothes.is to annotate the OER (you’ll need to be logged into Hypothes.is) or write a reflection (and post it publicly somewhere, ensuring that members of the TWP/INCAP Track have access to it) about how you plan to use the OER in your TWP or INCAP class. We will add the link to Christin’s OER here as soon as it is available.

Ambassadors:

  • Read (or-reread) a chapter of Cluster Learning at Plymouth State. Post a short comment on your thoughts about the chapter in the CPLC Season 3 General Channel; in a thread on Twitter using the hashtag #PSUopen; or on your own blog that you then link to us via Teams or Twitter.
  • One of the things we heard from the Season 2 CPLC participants was that the wider body of faculty and staff at PSU did not seem to be getting the message about the pedagogical approaches we are exploring through Cluster Learning (namely interdisciplinarity, project-based learning, and open education). They suggested that we do more to try to involve other colleagues in our community: introduce them to the ideas behind Cluster Learning, but also include them in collaborations to develop their excitement over trying new practices in their teaching and other work with students. In the Campus Ambassadors channel of Teams, share ANY IDEAS you have (good, bad, ridiculous, ugly) on how we can widen campus participation in Cluster Learning. Please share at least one before July 13th. You can also feel free to comment on others’ ideas as well!

Staff Learning Community:

  • Passion projects and staff survey question brainstorm on Jamboard (link found on SLC Leadership Teams)

Storytellers:

  • Read (or-reread) a chapter of Cluster Learning at Plymouth State. Post a short comment on your thoughts about the chapter in the CPLC Season 3 General Channel; in a thread on Twitter using the hashtag #PSUopen; or on your own blog that you then link to us via Teams or Twitter.
  • The CPLC is a learning community, and its goal is to foster growth and develop relationships that will facilitate the development of new approaches to teaching and learning for individual faculty and staff and for PSU as an institution. Because we focus on development, learning, and relationships rather than specific products, it can be hard to harness and our progress and communicate our ideas coherently with those outside of the learning community. How can we document our learning journey in a way that will make our work visible and involve the wider community in these efforts? Brainstorm and share your ideas in the Storytellers channel on Teams!

Accessibility & Open Advisors:

  • You folks provide support to faculty, but your areas are understaffed and can’t provide as much 1-to-1 assistance as you’d probably like. What could we do at the July and/or August CPLC sessions to move the needle on accessibility and open in course design without doing the same presentations that we usually offer? Brainstorm and share ideas on the Accessibility and Open Advisors channel on Teams!

Design Forward

Before the August (University Days) CPLC Meeting:

  • Schedule a debrief with Martha to talk about your experience in Design Forward.
  • Write your reflection about the Design Forward experience. These will serve as material for a possible longer, collaborative piece about the program and the idea of critical instructional design. More information about this will be provided during the month of June.

Session 3

July 13th, 8:30/9:00-12pm

Ambassadors, SLC: 1:00-2:00pm

Storytellers: FILL OUT DOODLE POLL!

Design Forward: 1-2:30pm

TWP/INCAP: 2:15-4:15pm

all via Zoom

Weekly Activities until August

Everyone

Go back to the Starting With Values activity. Think of a new activity, practice, or idea that you might add to your teaching or other university work in the fall that reflects your value, and add it to the table.

All Folks Who Did Not Attend on July 13:

  • To finish out your asynchronous participation for the July CPLC session, check out the Cluster Learning Slide Share that your colleagues created during our synchronous session. Write a question or response to something on the slides in our “CPLC Season 3 General Channel” on Teams.

TWP & INCAP:

Asynchronous participation for TWP/INCAP

Between July 13 and July 20, review the padlet (from the track syllabus: https://padlet.com/cleblanc11/nst9kryce26c3g5a) and create a one-pager that synthesizes your thoughts about at least 2 of the sessions. Be sure you identify which sessions you are synthesizing. You might include your questions about the sessions, your thoughts about the session description, what you are wondering about the discussion, etc. Post your one-pager to the Team channel by July 20. If you are new to one-pagers, this is a useful introduction: https://www.cultofpedagogy.com/one-pagers/

Homework for ALL TWP/INCAP

  1. Review the posted one-pagers. If there are one-pagers about a session you attended, respond in some way—answer questions, identify key discussion points, etc. If there are one-pagers for sessions you didn’t attend but are asking questions or making observations that you have thoughts about, share your thoughts.

  1. By now, you should be putting together the details of your classes for the Fall 2021 semester. If you are teaching TWP or INCAP, please do this assignment related to that class. If you are not teaching TWP or INCAP, use one of your other classes into which you might be applying some of the ideas we have explored in CPLC. Before our University Days session, share some aspect of your course in the Teams channel. You might share your syllabus, an assignment, a class activity, etc.

Ambassadors:

Add an idea to our GoogleDoc outreach brainstorm. Participate in the channel chat on Teams as we talk about the admin meeting.

Staff Learning Community:

Review our staff survey draft (document on Teams) and add comments for edits, changes, additions.

Storytellers

Fill out this DoodlePoll so we can meet to get started! Please do this now!

Accessibility & Open Advisors

Check out your channel in Teams– time to get planning for an August presentation!

Spring 2022

Join us on April 1, 2022 at 4:00 for a keynote by Kathleen Fitzpatrick.

Call for Participation

Thanks to generous support from the Davis Education Foundation, we are pleased to announce the third season of our grassroots faculty and staff effort to develop coherence and community around “Cluster Learning.” The CPLC is a dynamic and emergent initiative designed to support current pedagogy-related university projects, align campus efforts to innovate around curriculum and instruction, and refocus institutional efforts on teaching and learning. The curriculum and practices of the CPLC focus on three currently-identified aspects of cluster pedagogy: interdisciplinary learning, open learning, and project-based learning.

Deadline to Apply: April 1, 2021

Eligibility: All full- and part-time PSU employees are eligible to apply for all tracks. People who have participated in previous seasons of CPLC are welcome to apply. People may apply to, participate in, and collect the stipend for more than one track. Anyone who is not awarded a stipend to participate in a CPLC track due to our funding limits will still be able to participate in all experiences without the stipend if they choose.

Modality: The curriculum will be fully online in summer 2021, and then hybrid beginning in fall. Asynchronous online options will be provided for staff or TL participants who are unable to attend regular synchronous sessions due to PSU or external job requirements.

Time Commitment: CPLC3 will launch in May 2021 and run until May 2022. There will likely be four synchronous online half-day sessions during Summer 2021, and about an hour per week of additional online asynchronous work (much less for the TWP Repeaters). During the academic year, there will likely be one face-to-face 2-hour session per semester, and about an hour per week of additional online asynchronous work (again, much less for the TWP Repeaters). You will also be expected to attend certain January Jamboree and University Days sessions and complete certain assessments as part of this commitment. If you choose to enroll in multiple tracks, you should expect this work to multiply accordingly. The CPLC strives to be fully flexible, and will adjust to your needs as much as possible; please be ready to participate enthusiastically if you apply!

See track descriptions below to decide where you belong!

Tracks

TWP (Stipend Varies)

Repeaters ($500 stipend) “Repeaters”

Folks who have taught TWP before and plan to teach it in AY22. You will be expected to share your curricular materials and ideas, and stay current on new developments and discussions about the course. This track presumes your involvement in our learning community, but keeps extra work to a minimum. It does not include specific mentoring of newer TWP instructors.

Repeaters, Plus Mentoring ($1000 stipend) “Mentors”

Folks who have taught TWP before and plan to teach it in AY22. You will be expected to mentor colleagues who are new to the course, share your curricular materials and ideas, and stay current on new developments and discussions about the course.

First-Timers ($1000 stipend) “First-Timers”

Folks who have not taught TWP before but plan to teach it in AY22. You will receive a full introduction to the course, receive help and support as you develop your syllabus, and join a community of teachers who can assist you as you navigate the teaching. Anyone who is teaching TWP for the first time MUST select this track.

Note: If you are teaching TWP in AY22, you are expected to be part of the CPLC TWP track. If you would like to opt-out, please let Cathie Leblanc know!

InCAP ($1000 Stipend)

Folks planning to teach an INCAP in AY22 or AY23. You will receive a full introduction to the course, receive help and support as you develop your syllabus, and join a community of teachers who can assist you as you navigate the teaching. Open to those who have previously taught INCAP or participated in this track, as well as new folks.

Learning Community Development ($1000)

Folks who want to continue the intentional development of a Plymouth State learning community based around pedagogy. This track will provide opportunities for designing professional development processes and opportunities related to Cluster Learning; it will focus on creating an institutional culture that supports community-based approaches to teaching, learning, and faculty/staff development.
