What is game-based learning (GBL)? How is it different from gamified learning? What are some of the benefits of using GBL and play in the classroom? In this fast blast, Hannah will put her 10+ years experience as a table-top role-playing game master/ player (and instructional designer) to good use, exploring GBL as a method for promoting the real-world application of disciplinary knowledge, collaboration and communication, and engagement and presence in the classroom. This session is meant as a teaser for the longer workshop, Level Up Your Classroom: Exploring Game-Based Learning Techniques.
The journal article “Game On: Exploring the Effectiveness of Game-based Learning” (Hartt et al., 2020) provides a deeper dive into the research supporting GBL’s impact: https://faculty.ist.psu.edu/hadi/papers/JPPR20_HHM.pdf
