Way back on March 18, when we all began to realize that the pandemic was not going away and was going to get worse, I made a commitment to recognize at least one small good thing every day (yes, as in Raymond Carver’s “A Small, Good Thing”). Every day since then, I’ve been posting the small good things on instagram and twitter. Even on the worst days, this has encouraged me to look for something to be grateful for and comforted by. On the best days, the challenge is in choosing just one small good thing to post. An unexpected benefit from these posts has been hearing from people from all different parts of my life–family, friends, colleagues, students, people I know only from social media–who look forward to the small good thing every day. It’s a joy to be reminded of our connections with each other.
