I opted to teach hybrid this semester where the idea was to accommodate half of the class at a time in person while the other half participates via Zoom. The reality is that for my 3 classes, 1 is 100% on Zoom and for the other two, I generally have no more than 2 students in the room with me at a time.
Outside of teaching, I only come to campus 3 days a week and all of my meetings are conducted on Zoom. On the days when I am on campus, I see my AOM, and occasionally a collegue. Even when I’m walking around campus, it feels like a ghost town. I hardly see anyone at all.
On the one hand, seeing few people has alleviated my initial anxieties about being on campus and having exposure to a lot of people. But what I hadn’t expected, was how lonely this semester would feel. I never see anyone. I really miss contact with colleagues and students.
