Zoom teaching success … NOT

Write about the worst experience that you’ve had with technology. You could talk about an experience you had as an instructor, student, or some other time unrelated to the classroom. How did the technology fail you? How did you feel at the moment? What was your response? What did you take from the experience?

One of my worst idea was to use my phone and my phone pad and pen to explain concepts to students in zoom. This was when we made the switch to virtual when the pandemic started. So I watched some youtube videos how math teachers used this in their classes, and I thought it was a good idea, it would feel and look like when we are using the board. The setup was not easy, due to the sound interaction, you must place the pad and the camera a certain way, etc. I thought I did everything right, tested it, and was looking forward to a highly engaged lecture. And then…everything went wrong when the class started… sound interference that I could not figure put, my whole setup went wrong, totally fell apart, my phone pad felt awkward… The students were bewildered, I was flustered. I cut my losses and went back to the more “traditional” zoom class. Fortunately, now we have a whiteboard, so technology is already advanced beyond that. And honestly, I should have explored whiteboard alternatives at that time. I just like using my phone so much that I thought I could use it easily. I should give this approach another try with better use of technology. I don’t teach undergraduate via zoom any longer.
