To realize that learning takes time, and varying amounts of time for different people, that my need for efficiency does not serve the student.
To realize that students come with the baggage of how school has been for them up to this point, that they have many motivations for what the do, or don’t do, in class that may have nothing to do with the class itself. I’m thinking of students who do video games while they are in class. Maybe a “human” personal discussion with the student about what the attraction of the game that he needs that he is not getting from the class.
