An emergent exploration of critical instructional design.
Write about the worst experience that you’ve had with technology. You could talk about an experience you had as an instructor, student, or some other time unrelated to the classroom. How did the technology fail you? How did you feel at the moment? What was your response? What did you take from the experience?
As I make intentional decisions about the inclusion or exclusion of digital technologies, I find myself becoming increasingly concerned about the possible negative side-effects that may accompany extensive immersion with digital technology. It is all too easy to only consider the couple hours my students are exposed to technology in my classroom, but when I think about their exposure to digital technologies more holistically, our enthusiasm to immerse student learning in digital technology may unintentionally have a long-term negative impact on their health and well-being. New physical ailments from thumb over-usage with texting, over-exposure to blue light as well as increased near-sightedness, blurry vision, headaches, and dry eyes resulting from staring at computer screens, and even increased cases of attention-related disorders correlated with over 2 hours of screen time daily. With these concerns in mind, a responsible approach to incorporating technology into the learning process must take into account the learner’s holistic usage of digital technologies and the possible unintended negative consequences that could result from an excessive exposure to digital technology.
