An emergent exploration of critical instructional design.

Portfolio Part: Sunlight, Stories and Song

Written Reflection

As I am reflecting on these goals, I am sitting in the warm sun. It feels fabulous.

Goals remind me of moving towards the sunlight. As you work on constructing/destructing/building steam towards fulfilling the goal, it is like the weather. Some goal movement for me feels like a fresh sunny day, other times it is cloudy almost moving backwards.  Keeping focus is important for me as so many other tasks, responsibilities and life events pop up.

Stories Three years ago, the Student Nurse Association visited the citizens of Navajo Nation. They shared that their life fabric, stories, were being lost. I brainstormed how we could help preserve these stories. We are returning in 2024.

I would like to explore mediums/strategies that are culturally respectful and accessible for those interested to use.

Many of the elders we met and corresponded with, have now passed from COVID. I have a visceral response to this; all their wisdom and insights are hopefully rooted in others.

Song A student recently sent me a painting that they created to represent our relationship of student/faculty but more like two learners with unique perspectives to offer. I will share it in the gallery. The student thanked me for helping them discover and learn through the strategies that made them sing- be highly successful. Drawing is certainly one of their top strategies.

Certain disciplines lend themselves to rote learning styles, Nursing can certainly be one of these domains. Students need to understand key concepts deeply, acid-base balance to preserve life. I humbly believe that each person needs their song; the balance of various learning strategies and tools which permit them to best learn.

I would like to explore a way to bring perspective to students for them to explore how they best learn.
