An emergent exploration of critical instructional design.

Portfolio Part: Self ascribed techno-curmudgeon

Written Reflection

I waited to post my goal for these two weeks until I was able to engage with some of the materials and see how others are approaching things. I think my main goal is to see if I can fall back in love (or like) with technologies and their use in and around the classroom.

I find myself feeling increasingly alienated by technologies. I don’t use social media, I don’t engage around new, shiny gadgets, I barely use the “smart” features of my phone or other devices.

In the back of my mind, I am constantly wrestling with the sense that these technologies are doing damage to our ability to connect in deep and meaningful ways with one another…and, for me, the real value of education is through fostering deep connection.

In this sense, I have come to see technologies as antithetical to my purpose as a so-called teacher. I also realize (or feel as though) this is a admittedly narrow view of technologies and one that contradicts or is in tension with the ways that I used to view technologies with wonder and curiosity.
