Learning: A Work of Heart & Recipe for a Meaningful Life

Step One

Consider the words and phrases that come to mind when you describe what you think learning should look and feel like. In the space below, record as many words and phrases that come to mind. Do not limit yourself to what you think is acceptable or generally “approved” as words to describe learning.

Learning: A Work of Heart & Recipe for a Meaningful Life Course: All | Difficulty: Moderate | Servings: Daily | Preparation time: Lifetime | Equipment: mind, body, spirit, humility This recipe is from Kayla Gaudette a practicing human being exploring words and phrases that come to mind when describing how learning should look and feel like:

  • Courage
  • Bravery
  • Vulnerability
  • Optimal Confusion Zone [Context: There is a zone of optimal confusion right before learning takes place. – Brene Brown | Atlas of the Heart]
  • Expansion
  • Rumble
  • Growth mindset
  • Systems that support learning
  • Fuel for learning- food, rest, sleep, water, movement, time
  • Learning is a vote for the type of person I want to become
  • Inclusive
  • Being present
  • Having presence
  • Being kind- to others, oneself, and the earth
  • Nourishment
  • Curious
  • Mindful- awareness without judgement
  • Mindful curiosity! (OOOO new word pairing that is blowing my mind right now!)
  • “It’s like ridin’ a horse. If you’re comfortable while you’re doin’ it you’re probably doin’ it wrong.” -Ted Lasso
  • Awkward

Step Two

Now, review Bloom’s Taxonomy of Measurable Verbs (from Utica College) and compare the words and phrases in that document to the ones you chose. Below, fill out the sections based on what you chose and what you see in that document.

Words that appear on both lists

Practice? Question (curiosity)?

Words that are all my own

Oh gosh, reading the Bloom’s Taxonomy list I feel a bit embarrassed by my own words but I’m going to own them just the same. The majority of words do not appear on the Bloom’s list. Reflection: The words on this list are about the action of learning itself, the knowledge, comprehension, application and analysis of learning but when I framed this activity I think I am grounded in the preparation of the learner. How fascinating! I am also feeling confined with the assumption of this list that learning is just a verb. I am not in a space to expand further than this statement but something just doesn’t sit right.

Words that I would add from the document. . .and Why?

CuriosityWithout curiosity how would learning progress to a higher level?
