The Rules of the Room

Getting the Most Out of the Online Classroom

When we participate in online spaces and ask our students to do so, we often don’t take the time to reflect upon the “rules” and practices that govern these new “rooms.” Log on to your favorite social media platform, forum, or other online discussion space (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Discord, Word- Press, anything where you can talk to other people or you have seen people talking to other people). Take some time reading through a few discussion threads, then consider the following and record your thoughts below:

  • What are some of the unwritten “rules” of this space that participants seem to be aware of?
  • What happens when someone unknowingly or knowingly breaks an unwritten rule?
  • What is it about this space that stimulates authentic discussion?
  • What causes a discussion or thread to fizzle out?
  • What are some ways that participants facilitate back and forth conversation?
  • How can you use some of the observations you have made of these spaces to reimagine online classroom discussion?

Reflection

What are some of the unwritten “rules” of this space that participants seem to be aware of? I think most students are aware of simple respect for each other. What happens when someone unknowingly or knowingly breaks an unwritten rule? The instructor should reach out if someone breaks a rule. They should be careful on how they handle this. What is it about this space that stimulates authentic discussion? The requirement to respond thoughtfully. What causes a discussion or thread to fizzle out? Lack of participation. What are some ways that participants facilitate back and forth conversation? Reply to each other’s posts – adding, commenting, even disagreeing or offering another perspective. How can you use some of the observations you have made of these spaces to reimagine online classroom discussion? Clearly state that it is fine to offer other perspectives.
