Legacy Pedagogy Baggage

Allowing room for Discovery

In Legacy Pedagogy Baggage, Matthew R Morris reminds us to acknowledge and lay down the pedagogical ‘baggage’ that we carry with us. What is your own ‘legacy pedagogy baggage’?
I think I recognized early on that it’s partially the duty of a teacher to help their students avoid the mistakes they may have made, or the haphazard less than ideal approaches they may have taken to gain their current expertise or skills. I’ve thought this to be the case anyway, as someone once said ” people learn from their mistakes, but smart people learn from the mistakes of others” … So I attempt to encourage students onto a path better than my own. — But I wonder at times if this may be at odds with letting people explore, make mistakes and discover for themselves. It’s not just the duty of a teacher to share information , but to be a guide into deeper understandings and a path of lifelong learning. To some degree, showing someone something takes away their chance to discover it for themselves…. ( a very strange idea to have as a teacher, but I think it’s true ) . There’s something deeper about encouraging self discovery and instilling wonder and curiosity.

What would you need to help you lay it down?

I want to better convey this idea to students. It may require creative ways to get at or point in the direction of knowledge, while favoring their engagement with over simply being told some information. I believe finding greater ways to inspire curiosity and passion for the subjects being studied are interconnected as well.

What would you pick up instead?

I think this contemplation brings me more awareness about the value of students exploring their own ideas, assumption and insights, while I may simply observe or offer guidance or frameworks to help them navigate the topic. I know the value of discovering something for yourself, rather than having it simply pointed out for you.
