Weekly Dispatch: October 30, 2023

Each week, the Dispatch provides suggestions about what to focus your attention on. You may use it as a kind of weekly syllabus, with a suggested topic to explore, resource to read and annotate, questions to answer, and activities to complete. However, you should also feel free to deviate as you like from the suggestions; we want your participation in this module to reflect your own goals and interests.

We encourage you to choose at least one “engagement” a day:  join a conversation by responding to a question, complete an activity and share it in your portfolio, or choose a resource to read and annotate

Welcome to the first week of Care & Equity! We are so excited to be kicking off this module with such a great group of participants. We recommend you take some time today to get acclimated to the content of the module — in other words, explore and see what you can find! In addition, we’ve curated some module pieces below that you can use to get you started. Feel free to use this dispatch as an initial “roadmap” to the module.

Remember that all DF modules are centered around you. We want you to get out of this what matters most to you, so feel free to concentrate your efforts on those conversations, activities, readings that seem to resonate the most for you. That said: we encourage you to push a bit beyond your comfort zone and, most importantly, to stay engaged!

Topic in Focus

“Care” might seem like a pretty straightforward concept in our teaching, but we want to spend some time over the next two weeks unpacking what the word really means to us. Let’s be honest that care (for students, for colleagues, for our institution, for ourselves) doesn’t always feel easy. How can we develop a healthy and humane approach to caring?

Suggested Resources

Catherine Denial’s A Pedagogy of Kindness is a great, accessible read on how a shift in mindset about kindness towards students can have massive effects on how teaching and learning feels. And Jesse Stommel’s Dear Student addresses the, often deep and institutional, issues of student shaming and bullying. The piece by Joan Tronto is not explicitly about education, but I think it really pushes our thinking about the role of care in society at large.

Don’t forget to jump into Hypothesis and annotate as you read!

Suggested Questions

You can jump into any conversation (or propose your own), but we’ve suggested a few threads related to the topic of care to get you started.

We also encourage you to jump into the introductions thread so you can get to know your fellow participants as well.

Suggested Activities

We’ve chosen a few activities that are related to the topic of care. Remember you an complete them digitally or you can download the activity PDF, complete it by hand, and then upload a picture of your finished pages.
