Weekly Dispatch: Monday, September 30

Each week, the Dispatch provides suggestions about what to focus your attention on. You may use it as a kind of weekly syllabus, with a suggested topic to explore, resource to read and annotate, questions to answer, and activities to complete. However, you should also feel free to deviate as you like from the suggestions; we want your participation in this module to reflect your own goals and interests.

We encourage you to choose at least one “engagement” a day:  join a conversation by responding to a question, complete an activity and share it in your portfolio, or choose a resource to read and annotate

Thanks to everyone for their contributions and conversations this past week! We’re really enjoying hearing from all of you. This week, we’re turning our attention to the second topic of the module. In addition, if you haven’t chosen your “choice” reading  yet (you should plan on reading/annotating at least one piece from this group, in addition to all the “group” readings), this is a great time to do so. Finally, we want to draw your attention to all the great activities that other participants are completing; in case you didn’t know, you can comment on people’s activities and portfolio submissions in addition to discussion questions!

Topic in Focus

This week we focus on three specific approaches to teaching: critical pedagogy, pedagogies of care, and PSU’s own cluster teaching. These three lenses offer us the opportunity to talk more specifically about our own pedagogical values and how we weave them into our own classrooms.

Suggested Resources

We’ve highlighted the remaining two Group readings as well as two Choice readings that may provoke a bit of discussion and debate. Don’t forget to use Hypothesis to annotate the readings as you go!

Suggested Questions

This week, I’m drawing your attention to two questions related to your experiences before you started teaching — what do you wish you’d known more about? What experience(s) influenced you most as a student?

Suggested Activities

We’re highlighting a few more activities to help you explore your own practices. In addition, by the end of the week you may want to complete the Final Reflection activity.

Final Reflection

Take a moment to reflect upon what you’ve learned or thought about during this module. Are there particular readings that resonated with you? Was there
