I chose the tiny chairs sculpture in the CoLab because in every educational setting I’ve ever been in, there have always been chairs! Chairs allow us to sit still and listen. They often make a visual division between the students and the teachers who stand at the front and have the authority in the room. Chairs insure we stay in our place and focus, and do not move about and create distractions from the lecture or class discussion. This object does not necessarily just represent restrictions in educational environments though. Chairs can be arranged in ways that allow people to connect with their peers. Or teachers can choose to teach in the same circle of chairs and desks that the students are at. Some professors chose to have the students up and moving around most of the time or constantly changing where they sit for different group activities. Still, in this way not using chairs conventionally in a school setting also makes an emphasis on how much of how we learn, and how we experience the classroom revolves around chairs.
Wow, Dylan. Love this.
