My Legacy Pedagogy Baggage

In Legacy Pedagogy Baggage, Matthew R Morris reminds us to acknowledge and lay down the pedagogical ‘baggage’ that we carry with us. What is your own ‘legacy pedagogy baggage’?

-school is about getting good grades – what is learning?
-pressure to read absolutely e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g. assigned no matter the personal cost
-attendance vs. being present
-thinking/behaving differently = bad
-quiet = disengaged
-shame based teaching

What would you need to help you lay it down?

-showing my imperfect self to my students – yes, we (teachers) are human too -flexibility -divergence in learning is GOOD! -opportunities for physical and emotional movement in the classroom -open conversations about pedagogy in lots of spaces! -decentering whiteness -recognizing privilege and how it shows up in the learning environment -UDL

What would you pick up instead?

-continue recognizing that this baggage -learning about alternative pedagogy -supportive community -therapy (always therapy!) -space and time
