I think I recognized early on that it’s partially the duty of a teacher to help their students avoid the mistakes they may have made, or the haphazard less than ideal approaches they may have taken to gain their current expertise or skills. I’ve thought this to be the case anyway, as someone once said ” people learn from their mistakes, but smart people learn from the mistakes of others” … So I attempt to encourage students onto a path better than my own.
— But I wonder at times if this may be at odds with letting people explore, make mistakes and discover for themselves. It’s not just the duty of a teacher to share information , but to be a guide into deeper understandings and a path of lifelong learning.
To some degree, showing someone something takes away their chance to discover it for themselves…. ( a very strange idea to have as a teacher, but I think it’s true ) . There’s something deeper about encouraging self discovery and instilling wonder and curiosity.
