Hello Care & Equity crew! Welcome to Week 1 of the module. You’ll be hearing from me every Monday morning to provide an optional structure to engage with the module’s content, my own provocations, or pithy/ provocative highlights from our community discussion!
In my own path to creating more equitable learning environments, I hold onto two values: flexibility and support. I’m putting those into play today by both emphasizing that you can choose your own path of engagement in this module, but also providing you with a supportive structure for engaging. However you journey forth, we suggest that you aim to spend 10-30 minutes in the module daily, reflecting and responding to other cohort members. This will help the online community feel more active and vibrant!
For the first two weeks of June, we will focus on the first topic of the module, Framing and Practicing Equity, which tackles the complexity of designing and facilitating more equitable classrooms.
Suggested Structure for Engaging
- Review topic: Framing and Practicing Equity
- Complete and annotate core readings: The State Must Provide: A Lesson on Inequity in Higher Ed and Introduction and Chapter 1 of Who Cares?
- Select and annotate a reading from “Choice Resources” list.
- Take part in discussion(s):
- What do you think are some of the qualities of an βequitableβ learning environment?
- Have you ever been part of a learning environment or experience where you noticed something inequitable?
- What are some practices or strategies that you have employed in your teaching to encourage an equitable learning environment?
- Complete selected activities in your portfolio/ workbook (if you do work in your physical workbook, please consider sharing them to your portfolio):
If You Need Help…
Use the Design Forward Channel in the Teaching & Learning Teams to ask questions if you’re confused about what to be working on, need help with something on the website, or have a logistical/practical question.
Hannah’s Super Awesome DF Tips/ Hacks
- If you want to see how/ where members of your cohort have most recently engaged, check out the Care and Equity homepage to see recent annotations, comments, and portfolio additions!
- If you an actionable design idea comes to mind while you are engaging in the module, look for the apple icon to add a βDesign Bite.β As DF participants add more Bites, we will assemble a library of these that will be searchable by type, tags, and modules.
- Do you have a burning thought that you want to share with the group? You have two pathways! The first is to create a new question for the cohort to grapple with and respond with your own thoughts. The second is to create a freeform portfolio post.
