Weekly Dispatch: February 10, 2024

Each week, the Dispatch provides suggestions about what to focus your attention on. You may use it as a kind of weekly syllabus, with a suggested topic to explore, resource to read and annotate, questions to answer, and activities to complete. However, you should also feel free to deviate as you like from the suggestions; we want your participation in this module to reflect your own goals and interests.

We encourage you to choose at least one “engagement” a day:  join a conversation by responding to a question, complete an activity and share it in your portfolio, or choose a resource to read and annotate

Welcome to Week One of Technology & Tools! In particular, we want to welcome not only our PSU participants, but those who are joining us from Keene State and UNH. We’re delighted to have the additional voices and perspectives!

Please feel free to use this dispatch to guide your participation this week. We’ve suggested a topic for this week, as well as some related discussion questions, resources, and activities. As always, you’re welcome to deviate from the path and follow your own interests wherever they take you.

Generally, it’s a good idea to try and devote some time every day to working in the module; we know that some days you will have more time than others, so tailor your participation to your own work and life! Two weeks goes by fast, so if we don’t hear/see from you in the next day or so, we may reach out to make sure everything is okay. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns about your participation over the next two weeks.

Topic in Focus

The Technology/Pedagogy Dance

When talking about the use of technology within educational settings, it’s common to hear people say “It’s not about the technology; it’s about the teaching.”

The topic for this week is “The Technology/Pedagogy Dance.” As you review the topic materials, consider how you would describe your own current relationship with technology in your teaching. Is it a dance? A reluctant friendship? A distant standoff? Do you find your feelings about technology impacting (or even interfering with!) how you choose to engage with it in the classroom?

Suggested Resources

We’ve linked to one Group reading this week (to be read/annotated by everyone) as well as a few Choice readings (you only need to choose one of these to read/annotate during the module). Feel free to follow our recommendations or explore all of the resources to find one that resonates with you.

NOTE: Because some participants were having trouble accessing the Davidson piece, we’ve added another Group reading about digital literacy. You do not need to read both of these!

Suggested Questions

The questions we’ve linked to will help you to dig a little deeper into your experience with technology and how you approach challenging situations with digital pedagogy.

Suggested Activities

We invite you to start off this week by setting some goals for yourself; we’ve linked to another activity that will hopefully get you thinking creatively about the best possible ways technology could support you as an instructor.

Setting Your Goals

Take some time to think about your goals for yourself as you explore and experience this DF module. What are you hoping to learn more
