The Brain Knows All

I’m looking for a book to read. Where do I go?

Five Things to Know

  1. Lamson Library has more than just scholarly works! There are popular fiction and nonfiction books, graphic novels, and children’s books, too.
  2. Newer books are shelved in the Browsing section of the library on the main level, near the Information Desk. This can be a great place to find a book if you don’t have anything specific in mind.
  3. You can search the library catalog by title, author, or even subject. The catalog is accessed from the Lamson Library home page. Visit the reference desk for help searching the catalog.
  4. Undergraduate students can borrow books for 30 days.
  5. There are designated areas for graphic novels (upper level of the library), children’s books (lower level of the library), and oversize books (upper level of the library). If you can’t find something, ask for help at the Information or Reference desks.

A Deeper Dive

  1. In college, you graduate from using the Dewey Decimal System to a system called the Library of Congress system. Call numbers start with a letter or pair of letters, like N or TX.
  2. If you want to browse our fiction shelves, look for the call numbers PQ, PR, PS, or PT. Books are assigned a classification according to the author’s home country. PR is British Literature; PS is American.
  3. There’s more than just books in the catalog. Click the “Books” icon on the library home page to restrict your search to books only.
  4. The library has ebooks in addition to print books. These can be read in your browser, or you can download them for offline reading.
  5. You can borrow physical books from other libraries! You can borrow directly from most other colleges in New Hampshire, use Interlibrary Loan to request a book, or, with your PSU ID, you can get a library card at Pease Public Library in Plymouth.
