- Choose a comfortable environment, somewhere that helps you focus and that’s comfortable and quiet (unless you need noise). Clear all distractions by hiding your phone, choosing a room with no TV, etc. Equip yourself with food, water, coffee, etc. Make sure you have no other commitments so you can dedicate the time to your work.
- Make sure you understand the requirements of the assignment by reviewing the assignment expectations, rubric, and writing style (MLA, APA, etc.).
- Read about the topic. Start by rereading the assignment and any associated readings. Consider a quick Google search for additional info.
- Brainstorm using a graphic organizer, e.g., a word web. Another way to brainstorm is freewriting—just get something on paper and know it doesn’t have to be organized or coherent. You won’t keep everything you write, but freewriting can help you get something on paper/screen.
- Form an outline. First, list and select ideas from your brainstorming. Then organize the list into outline form to give yourself a clear plan to follow when you start drafting. A good outline can really pay off.
