SUMMARY:Mentioning the Unmentionable: Facilitating Difficult Conversations in the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by the IDEA Center and the Open CoLab. \nPresenters will demonstrate how to create a climate of courageous inquiry through introduction and definition of the terms bias\, prejudice\, and discrimination using emotionally-neutral\, often humorous examples.  Following a brief didactic presentation of Kidder’s (1995) three modes of thinking that can guide when to step into a potentially emotionally-charged topic\, presenters will provide a series of vignettes to simultaneously model strategies educators can employ in their own classrooms\, and engage participants in a lived experience of taking part in a discussion about a potentially challenging topic.  Participants will have opportunities to debrief and process their responses to being active participants in discussions of challenging topics.  In addition\, presenters will facilitate a reflection time in which participants may begin to evaluate their own practices and synthesize workshop content. \n  \n\nPresenters: \n  \n\n\nJudith Josiah-Martin\, PhD\, ACSW\, CADC\, has been a part of the University of Maine School of Social Work faculty for 10 years\, prior to which she served the UMaine community as the Director of Multicultural Student Life. Her alma maters are Smith College School of Social Work for a PhD in Clinical Social Work\, and Washington University-St. Louis for a MSW degree emphasis in Social Welfare\, Administration and Community Development. Dr. Josiah-Martin was the 2021 President’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award recipient for the University of Maine. A member of NASW ME chapter with service to the DEI committee. Past member of the editorial committee for Smith College Studies in Social Work and Journal of Groups in Addiction and Recovery. Dr. Josiah-Martin is an experienced clinician\, program administrator\, community advocate\, educator\, training consultant and researcher. Her areas of specialization include: substance use and trauma related disorders; practice interventions for under-represented and marginalized populations; and intercultural effective communication in the workplace. \n\n\n  \n\n\nAlison Smith Mitchell\, PhD\, LICSW is an Assistant Professor in Social Work at PSU\, and recipient of the 2023-24 Transformative Teaching Award.  She earned her PhD in clinical social work from the Smith College School for Social Work and completed an MSW at the University of Maine School of Social Work.  Dr. Mitchell’s research focuses on supporting rural opioid-affected families\, and on advancing social work pedagogy.  Dr. Mitchell serves as an Early Career Reviewer for the Journal of the Society for Social Work and Research.  She is on the board of the NASW-NH\, and a member of the Executive Committee and Continuing Education Review Committee.  She was a Court Appointed Special Advocates for children (CASA) volunteer guardian ad litem for children in protection cases in Maine for over a decade\, and was formerly a K-12 educator\, administrator\, and elected school board member.  Dr. Mitchell is an independently licensed clinical social worker in New Hampshire and Maine.  Outside of the classroom\, she enjoys hiking\, skiing\, and playing with her dogs. \n\nOops! SUMMARY:A BOThersome Challenge: Developing A Framework with Generative AI in Teaching and Learning
DESCRIPTION:This interactive discussion will explore some of the challenges and considerations that faculty are navigating as they reconcile the rapid expansion of generative artificial intelligence tools and the implications for their work\, their teaching\, and their students.  The session will include opportunities to learn from other faculty\, interact with generative AI\, evaluate its outputs\, and develop some initial approaches to the challenges and opportunities that generative AI represents in higher education.  Participants should come prepared with a willingness to share their use-cases and concerns as well as  laptops to engage with generative AI as part of the session. \nSpeaker Bio \nLance Eaton is the Director of Faculty Development & Innovation at College Unbound\, a part-time instructor at North Shore Community College\, and a PhD student at the University of Massachusetts\, Boston with a dissertation that focuses on how scholars engage in academic piracy. His work engages with the possibility of digital tools for expanding teaching and learning communities while considering the various deep issues and questions that educational technologies open up for students\, faculty\, and higher ed as a whole. He has given talks\, written about\, and presented at conferences on artificial intelligence generative tools in education\, academic piracy\, open access\, OER\, open pedagogy\, hybrid flexible learning\, and digital service-learning. His musings\, reflections\, and ramblings on AI and Education can be found on his blog: https://aiedusimplified.substack.com/ \nThere will be a cash bar at this event\, so please bring money if you would like to enjoy an adult beverage! SUMMARY:Belonging by Design: Creating Courses That Are Intentionally Inclusive
DESCRIPTION:By definition\, teaching is inclusive. If a potential learner\, regardless of their identity\, felt left out\, then teaching did not occur. From a learning science perspective: the availability of cognitive resources depends entirely on a sense of safety. From a learner’s perspective: “If I don’t feel welcome\, I can’t learn.” Inclusion\, therefore\, is the foundation for any classroom. \nWe can design inclusion into our courses. When we prioritize belonging\, studies indicate that we not only improve student learning\, but we also make teaching easier. Strategies like scheduling reflective pauses\, replacing due dates with checkpoints\, and turning a syllabus into a brochure are examples. \nCome listen to and hang out with one of our favorite thinkers in higher ed! We will have food and a cash bar\, so join us for a relaxing and fun Friday afternoon! \nAbout the Speaker:\nJT Torres earned a PhD in Educational Psychology from Washington State University. He researches the relationship between learning and identity\, focusing on the social interactions that shape the ways learners define themselves. Both his scholarship and his teaching are informed by his experience in creative writing. With an MFA from Georgia College & State University\, JT employs creative methods and strategies to intersect what William James referred to as the art and science of teaching. His co-authored book\, Situated Narratives and Sacred Dance\, shares stories of religious practitioners in Cuba who learn social identities through ritual spirit possession ceremonies. His novella\, Taking Flight\, tells the story of a Cuban-American child who must discover his family’s secret before they disappear from history. He directs the Center for Teaching and Learning at Quinnipiac University.\nOops! SUMMARY:Envisioning the Privacy-Aware Professor: A panel exploring the impacts of edtech on policy and pedagogy
DESCRIPTION:Educational technologies permeate our teaching in many ways these days\, whether we teach fully online\, fully face-to-face\, or somewhere in the vast in-between. However\, these also raise security and privacy considerations. This panel discussion brings together faculty members\, IT professionals\, instructional designers\, and experts on privacy for a lively conversation focused on the ethical and classroom management issues that lie underneath the daily decisions that we make (or that are made for us) about which technologies we use and how we use them. Designed for faculty who wish to learn more about privacy\, security\, and the ethics of educational technology\, this discussion will highlight some key challenges and opportunities\, and offer ideas and strategies to help you develop your own ethical framework to guide you in choosing and using technology in your teaching. \nPanelists: \nRobin DeRosa (Moderator) is the Director of Learning & Libraries at Plymouth State University\, where she helps lead the Open Learning & Teaching Collaborative. Robin is an advocate for open architectures for learning environments\, and is deeply committed to championing user agency and privacy as she supports access and sharing in education. \nRaj Sachdev has over 26 years of industry and academic experience and is an Assistant Professor at Plymouth State. He is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US)\, a licensed attorney (California)\, consultant\, interdisciplinary researcher\, and international speaker regularly speaking on topics of privacy and security as they interact with marketing and law. A graduate of Oxford University\, he is an assistant facilitator at Cornell University\, former visiting researcher at UC Berkeley and former adjunct instructor at Stanford CSP and Oxford University. A Tedx and AMA Keynote speaker\, he has also guest spoken globally at such places as Oxford\, Cambridge\, Harvard and Stanford Universities and at major industry conferences and events.  He has taught/facilitated over 55 different courses at various institutions and is a forthcoming author of a digital marketing textbook which also includes issues of privacy and security.  Disclaimer: no legal advice provided in this event.    \nAmy Collier is the Associate Provost for Digital Learning at Middlebury College. She provides strategic vision and leadership for Middlebury to create and sustain a global learning community through the effective use of digital pedagogies and technologies. Amy Collier received her doctorate from Texas Woman’s University in 2008. Through her graduate studies in social sciences and more than 10 years working in faculty development\, Amy has been an advocate for learners and teachers across a variety of educational institutions\, from community-based service organizations to large public broad-access universities. She frequently presents at universities and conferences\, sharing her passion for topics like student privacy\, critical instructional design\, design justice\, and complexity in education. \nAutumm Caines is a liminal space. Part technologist\, part artist\, part manager\, part synthesizer she aspires to be mostly educator. You will find Autumm at the place where different disciplines and fields intersect\, always on the threshold\, and trying to learn something new. She has worked in educational technology\, instructional design\, and faculty development in higher education for 15 years. Currently\, she is an Instructional Designer at the University of Michigan – Dearborn working in the Hub for Teaching and Learning Resources\, and Instructional Faculty at College Unbound where she teaches Digital Citizenship and Web/Digital Portfolio. Her scholarly and research interests include blended/hybrid and online learning\, open education\, digital literacy/citizenship with a focus on equity and access\, and online community development. This blend of interests has led Autumm to be concerned about mounting ethical issues in educational technology. She has written and presented on topics concerning educational surveillance\, student data collection\, and remote proctoring. You can find out more about her professional experience\, teaching\, publications\, and presentations on her professional website at autumm.org. \nChris Gilliard has a PhD from Purdue University’s Rhetoric and Composition Program and he currently teaches at Macomb Community College. His early work focused on the ways that narratives about black athletes constructed blackness along a narrow and limiting spectrum. He’s shifted that focus a bit\, and for the last several years his scholarship has concentrated on privacy\, institutional tech policy\, digital redlining\, and the re-inventions of discriminatory practices through data mining and algorithmic decision-making\, especially as these apply to college students. He is currently developing a project that looks at how popular misunderstandings of mathematical concepts create the illusions of fairness and objectivity in student analytics\, predictive policing\, and hiring practices. \nThomas Nudd is the Chief Information Security Officer for the University System of New Hampshire. He is responsible for all facets of cybersecurity for UNH\, UNH Manchester\, UNH Law\, Plymouth State University and Keene State College. Prior to his CISO Role at USNH he spent 14 years in various Cybersecurity leadership and engineering roles at Liberty Mutual\, the sixth-largest global property and casualty insurer. Along with various industry certifications\, Tom holds a master’s in information assurance from Norwich University and an MBA from Southern NH University. \nOops! We could not locate your form.

SUMMARY:Trevor Durbin on "Teaching to Cultivate a Better Anthropocene: From Failure to Nurture"
DESCRIPTION:Imagine a thoughtful student. Imagine their distress when confronted with some of our most urgent challenges: climate change\, species extinction\, plastic pollution\, food insecurity\, and climate-driven conflict. In short: a bad Anthropocene. They ask: “It’s all so overwhelming\, what can I do that will actually make a difference?” \nHow would you answer? \nNearly a decade ago\, a student asked Trevor Durbin this question\, and he was stumped. That profound failure sent him on a quest to help students imagine how they might overcome inaction and do something meaningful in the face of planetary crisis. This talk re-tells some of his pedagogical journey\, including its failures and partial successes. He suggests no panacea but offers something rich in potential\, an invitation to plant and nurture\, with our students\, seeds for a better Anthropocene. Following the talk\, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and engage in dialogue with Trevor and with each other. \nAll welcome! Free! \nTrevor Durbin is an environmental and medical anthropologist and assistant professor of anthropology at Kansas State University. He has conducted ethnographic fieldwork on the impacts of\, and responses to\, environmental change in Samoa\, the Cook Islands\, Fiji\, the Republic of Kiribati\, and throughout the Western United States. He truly enjoys teaching and doing research with undergraduates.

SUMMARY:Keynote: Kathleen Fitzpatrick on "Generous Thinking: A Radical Approach to Saving the University"
DESCRIPTION:Higher education occupies a difficult place in twenty-first-century American culture. Universities―the institutions that bear so much responsibility for the future health of our nation―are at odds with the very publics they are intended to serve. It is imperative that we re-center the mission of the university to rebuild that lost trust. Critical thinking―the heart of what academics do―can today often negate\, refuse\, and reject new ideas. In an age characterized by rampant anti-intellectualism\, Generous Thinking charges the academy with thinking constructively rather than competitively\, building new ideas rather than tearing old ones down. We need to rethink how we teach the humanities and to refocus our attention on the very human ends―the desire for community and connection―that the humanities can best serve.\nA virtual event!\n \n \n Register Now

SUMMARY:Diversity\, Equity & Inclusion Workshop: Structural Bias at PSU
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Psychology Professor Katie Wolsiefer\, this 3-part workshop is designed to broadly examine the ways in which individual level and structural level biases impact the PSU community. The first two workshops will focus on practicing social psychology based strategies for mitigating one’s own (implicit and explicit) biases. Workshop 3 will take the form of a discussion about the ways in which systems and structures at PSU could be improved to increase equity and inclusion. The goal of this last workshop is bring members of the campus community together to identify (and begin planning) ways we can make this a more inclusive community. \nYou may attend one\, two or all three workshops and there are no prerequisites for participation.  \nPass Sessions: \n\nOctober 13 4PM – 5PM: Bias Reduction in Higher Education (part 1): Looking out for microaggressions and subtle behaviors.\nNovember 10 4PM – 5PM: Bias Reduction in Higher Education (part 2): Using bias reduction techniques from the social psychology literature.\n\nThis event: \nDecember 8 4PM – 5PM: Bias Reduction in Higher Education (part 3): Structural sources of bias at PSU. \nDescription: This workshop will focus on biases in the systems at PSU that negatively impact students\, faculty\, and staff from marginalized groups. This workshop is intended to be a discussion\, where were work together to identify potential issues facing PSU. I am aware that these discussions are already happening in a few different communities/groups on campus. My hope is that this discussion will help connect individuals interested in enacting structural change and inform the topics/format of workshops for Spring 2022. This event is hybrid and is open to all faculty and staff.
