SUMMARY:Access and the Poor College: A Conversation with Matt Brim and Danica Savonick
DESCRIPTION:What does “access” mean for underfunded schools? How have inequities in funding shaped scholarship and disciplines? What is the future of education in an ever-more-unequal America? \nWe will be joined by Matt Brim\, author of Poor Queer Studies: Confronting Elitism in the University (Duke University Press\, 2020) and Danica Savonick\, author of Open Admissions: The Poetics and Pedagogy of Toni Cade Bambara\, June Jordan\, Audre Lorde\, and Adrienne Rich in the Era of Free College (Duke University Press\, 2024) to explore these and other questions important for anyone working in public higher education right now. \nCopies of Poor Queer Studies and Open Admissions will be available to in-person attendees on a first-come basis. \nMatt Brim is Professor of Queer Studies in the English department at the College of Staten Island and an affiliate faculty in the Women’s and Gender Studies M.A. Program at the CUNY Graduate Center\, where he is also the Executive Director of CLAGS: The Center for LGBTQ Studies. In addition to Poor Queer Studies\, he is the author of James Baldwin and the Queer Imagination (University of Michigan Press\, 2014) and co-editor of Queer Precarities in and out of Higher Education: Challenging Institutional Structures (coedited with Churnjeet Mahn and Yvette Taylor; Bloomsbury Academic\, 2023)\, Queer Sharing in the Marketized University (coedited with Yvette Taylor and Churnjeet Mahn; Routledge 2023)\, and Imagining Queer Methods (with Amin Ghaziani; NYU Press\, 2019). \nDanica Savonick is an Assistant Professor of English at SUNY Cortland\, where she teaches courses on multicultural and African American literature\, feminist theory\, and digital humanities. In addition to publishing Open Admissions\, she has had research appear in MELUS\, American Literature\, Modern Fiction Studies\, Keywords for Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities\, Digital Humanities Quarterly\, and Hybrid Pedagogy as well as Inside Higher Ed and the Chronicle of Higher Education. She is currently working on a project about the radical writers and artists who taught at Livingston College (part of Rutgers University) in the 1970s. \nOops! We could not locate your form.

SUMMARY:Towards a Poor College: Shaping Our Priorities in an Era of Austerity
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, there are schools with large endowments and immense financial resources … and there are other types of schools such as underfunded regional public universities. The truth is\, most American students go to poor colleges\, not rich ones. Instead of seeing the poor college as a place of lack\, might we find some benefits in such an environment? Drawing on ideas from Virginia Woolf\, Jerzy Grotowski\, and\, especially\, the work of Matt Brim and Danica Savonick\, Matthew Cheney teases out some ideas about what really matters in education and how we might position ourselves as proud members of a poor college movement.

SUMMARY:Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Open Access Publishing (But Were Afraid to Ask)
DESCRIPTION:Join Co-Director of punctum books\, Eileen A. Fradenburg Joy\, and PSU Director of Interdisciplinary Studies (and punctum author) Matthew Cheney for a conversation about Open Access publishing: the what\, the how\, the why. \nFounded in 2011\, punctum is an independent queer- and scholar-led\, community-formed\, and peer-reviewed fully open-access (OA) publisher devoted to academic and para-academic authors working in any field in the humanities\, social sciences\, fine arts\, and architecture & design. From its start\, punctum has remained committed to an OA book publishing model that never charges fees to authors and that privileges cooperative expertise and knowledge sharing between librarians\, knowledge managers\, publishers\, and scholar-researchers. \nJoin us to learn about the opportunities that open access publishing creates for scholars\, teachers\, librarians\, and students to work together and enhance the knowledge commons. \n  \nEileen A. Fradenburg Joy is a specialist in Old English literary studies and cultural studies\, with a wide variety of publications in poetry and poetics\, intellectual history\, queer studies\, ethical philosophy\, affect and embodiment\, state violence and sovereignty\, object studies\, post/humanisms\, and scholarly communications. She is the Founding Director of punctum books\, Founding Ingenitor of the BABEL Working Group\, and Founding Editor of postmedieval: a journal of medieval cultural studies. \n \n  \nMatthew Cheney is Associate Professor and Director of Interdisciplinary Studies at Plymouth State University and the author of About That Life: Barry Lopez and the Art of Community (punctum books\, 2023)\, Modernist Crisis and the Pedagogy of Form (Bloomsbury Academic\, 2020)\, and other works. \n  \nOops! SUMMARY:Data: A Health Story (with Eric Ratinoff)
DESCRIPTION:In the world of public health\, data rules. Data helps us advance understanding and inform decision making. \nBut to much of the public\, data is just a bunch of numbers. It’s not personal\, memorable\, or meaningful — so it’s usually not persuasive\, either\, no matter how exciting or alarming it may be to those inside the health professions. So if so much of health communication aims to motivate behavior change\, why do we keep trying to persuade people with data? Isn’t there some other way? \nActually\, there is: You can bake that data into a story. \nIn this presentation\, we’ll show how to find the story within the data\, and tell that story in a way that will help audiences not only understand the data\, but also see the world in which that data lives — their world — differently. \n  \nThis event is sponsored by the Interdisciplinary Studies Program at Plymouth State University. \n  \nEric Ratinoff is the founder and Chief Storyteller of Story First\, a strategic storytelling firm that helps companies and organizations get clear about their story and tell it more effectively. \nStory First works with a wide range of non-profit\, corporate\, educational\, and political clients from across the United States. Eric has presented on storytelling in health communication at the American Public Health Association annual conference and at the CDC’s National Conference on Health Communication\, Marketing\, and Media; and has been invited to speak about storytelling to university\, corporate\, and non-profit audiences. \nEric is also a co-founder and principal in The Mouse and the Elephant\, a diversity\, equity\, and inclusion training and consulting firm. He served as the Executive Editor for the Ferguson Commission report\, Forward Through Ferguson; and co-authored A Seat at the Table\, an award-winning column on diversity and inclusion in the New Hampshire Business Review. Eric also spoke at TEDxCapeMay in New Jersey\, with a talk titled “Once Upon a Time At The Office: How Stories Shape Culture At Work.” \nEric previously taught Technical Writing in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Washington University in St. Louis\, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in English.Oops! SUMMARY:Graveyards of Academe: The Necroliberal University
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by Benjamin Balthaser and Bill V. Mullen’s essay “The Necroliberal University:COVID-19\, racial violence\, and the management of death“\, this event offers us an opportunity to discuss current practices and ideologies of higher education. Necroliberal melds neoliberal with necropolitical\, resulting in a word that suggests the management and administration of death within an environment celebrating freedom\, individualism\, and prosperity. \nBalthaser and Mullen argue that the global pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement have converged to highlight the necroliberalism of universities that now must weigh the danger of the pandemic versus the economic toll of remote work\, that must confront their racialized histories and figure out how to issue institutional statements about systemic racism. The ivory tower has been breached. “For many years\,” Balthaser and Mullen write\, “the university has been imagined as a site removed\, a place in which class\, race\, and social conflict can be managed. That era is over: the madness now has a glossy thirty-page brochure and an ever-increasing death count.” \nFor this discussion\, we will present some of the ideas from the essay\, along with basic explanations of neoliberalism\, necropolitics\, and necroliberalism\, and ask what use such ideas might have (if any) for us as we navigate the new/old world of higher education today. We will also probably make some zombie jokes and occasionally yell out\, “Brains! Brains!” \nDiscussion leaders: Matthew Cheney (Interdisciplinary Studies) and Nic Helms (English) \n \n Request Meeting Link\n \n\n Request Meeting Link \n × \n\nRequest Meeting Link: Graveyards of Academe: The Necroliberal University\n\nName*\n \n First\n \n Last\n \nEmail*\n \n \nFrom your email address\, it looks like you may not be affiliated with Plymouth State University.
