SUMMARY:Designing for Emergent Learning
DESCRIPTION:During this 60-minute workshop\, we will explore how to design for emergent\, flexible\, and unpredictable learning\, particularly the kind inspired by cluster learning. \nThe CoLab will provide a brief presentation about the topic and possible approaches and will facilitate a larger conversation about how faculty are approaching this now\, what challenges they are facing\, and how those challenges might be met. \nBy the end of the workshop\, each participant will have come up with at least one approach to emergent pedagogy they would like to try. Optional follow-up meetings with the CoLab are available to all participants to continue to talk about this topic. \nSnacks and beverages provided

SUMMARY:Access and the Poor College: A Conversation with Matt Brim and Danica Savonick
DESCRIPTION:What does “access” mean for underfunded schools? How have inequities in funding shaped scholarship and disciplines? What is the future of education in an ever-more-unequal America? \nWe will be joined by Matt Brim\, author of Poor Queer Studies: Confronting Elitism in the University (Duke University Press\, 2020) and Danica Savonick\, author of Open Admissions: The Poetics and Pedagogy of Toni Cade Bambara\, June Jordan\, Audre Lorde\, and Adrienne Rich in the Era of Free College (Duke University Press\, 2024) to explore these and other questions important for anyone working in public higher education right now. \nCopies of Poor Queer Studies and Open Admissions will be available to in-person attendees on a first-come basis. \nMatt Brim is Professor of Queer Studies in the English department at the College of Staten Island and an affiliate faculty in the Women’s and Gender Studies M.A. Program at the CUNY Graduate Center\, where he is also the Executive Director of CLAGS: The Center for LGBTQ Studies. In addition to Poor Queer Studies\, he is the author of James Baldwin and the Queer Imagination (University of Michigan Press\, 2014) and co-editor of Queer Precarities in and out of Higher Education: Challenging Institutional Structures (coedited with Churnjeet Mahn and Yvette Taylor; Bloomsbury Academic\, 2023)\, Queer Sharing in the Marketized University (coedited with Yvette Taylor and Churnjeet Mahn; Routledge 2023)\, and Imagining Queer Methods (with Amin Ghaziani; NYU Press\, 2019). \nDanica Savonick is an Assistant Professor of English at SUNY Cortland\, where she teaches courses on multicultural and African American literature\, feminist theory\, and digital humanities. In addition to publishing Open Admissions\, she has had research appear in MELUS\, American Literature\, Modern Fiction Studies\, Keywords for Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities\, Digital Humanities Quarterly\, and Hybrid Pedagogy as well as Inside Higher Ed and the Chronicle of Higher Education. She is currently working on a project about the radical writers and artists who taught at Livingston College (part of Rutgers University) in the 1970s. \nOops! We could not locate your form.

SUMMARY:Towards a Poor College: Shaping Our Priorities in an Era of Austerity
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, there are schools with large endowments and immense financial resources … and there are other types of schools such as underfunded regional public universities. The truth is\, most American students go to poor colleges\, not rich ones. Instead of seeing the poor college as a place of lack\, might we find some benefits in such an environment? Drawing on ideas from Virginia Woolf\, Jerzy Grotowski\, and\, especially\, the work of Matt Brim and Danica Savonick\, Matthew Cheney teases out some ideas about what really matters in education and how we might position ourselves as proud members of a poor college movement.

SUMMARY:Spring Pedagogy Institute 2024: Teaching (in) GenZ
DESCRIPTION:Join the CoLab for the first Spring Pedagogy Institute (SPIN) on May 14th from 9AM to 5PM. This year\, the focus will be on “Teaching (in) GenZ: Our Changing Information Ecosystem.” We will be joined by Dave Cormier of the University of Windsor and author of Learning in a Time of Abundance: The Community Is the Curriculum. He will offer a brief\, virtual provocation about how learners today are adapting to the changing landscape of information and technology. \nIn the afternoon\, PSU faculty are invited to present about their own teaching successes and challenges during a series of 15-20 minute “fast blasts.” \nAfter the formal SPIN program has ended\, the event will continue with “Bonus Track: Focus on HoME” during which faculty of HoME will lead a series of sessions designed to help us take the HoME program to the next level. \nMore information (including registration and presentation submissions forms) are available on the SPIN website.

SUMMARY:A BOThersome Challenge: Developing A Framework with Generative AI in Teaching and Learning
DESCRIPTION:This interactive discussion will explore some of the challenges and considerations that faculty are navigating as they reconcile the rapid expansion of generative artificial intelligence tools and the implications for their work\, their teaching\, and their students.  The session will include opportunities to learn from other faculty\, interact with generative AI\, evaluate its outputs\, and develop some initial approaches to the challenges and opportunities that generative AI represents in higher education.  Participants should come prepared with a willingness to share their use-cases and concerns as well as  laptops to engage with generative AI as part of the session. \nSpeaker Bio \nLance Eaton is the Director of Faculty Development & Innovation at College Unbound\, a part-time instructor at North Shore Community College\, and a PhD student at the University of Massachusetts\, Boston with a dissertation that focuses on how scholars engage in academic piracy. His work engages with the possibility of digital tools for expanding teaching and learning communities while considering the various deep issues and questions that educational technologies open up for students\, faculty\, and higher ed as a whole. He has given talks\, written about\, and presented at conferences on artificial intelligence generative tools in education\, academic piracy\, open access\, OER\, open pedagogy\, hybrid flexible learning\, and digital service-learning. His musings\, reflections\, and ramblings on AI and Education can be found on his blog: https://aiedusimplified.substack.com/ \nThere will be a cash bar at this event\, so please bring money if you would like to enjoy an adult beverage! Snacks will be served as well! \nOops! We could not locate your form.
