SUMMARY:FROST Day
DESCRIPTION:Join the CoLab for FROST Day\, a morning and afternoon all about Fellowship\, Reflection\, Openness\, Solidarity\, and  Teaching. This event will incorporate both formal and informal opportunities to work\, collaborate\, and share with your colleagues. Attend what you can\, and come and go as you need: \n8:00-8:30: Breakfast and Mingling \n8:30-9:00: Announcements from the CoLab. Learn about spring programming and Season Two of the Davis Grant. \n9:00-12:00: Open Workshop Time. We will have multiple rooms set up for different needs and purposes: \n\nGrading Sprint: If you’re still working on end-of-semester grading\, join colleagues in a quiet room and “body double” until you’re done (or at least closer to being done!)\nSpring Design Conversations: Join colleagues seeking feedback or sharing ideas related to spring classes.\nTeaching Challenge Discussion: Join a (lightly) moderated conversation to discuss specific challenges you encountered this fall.\nSomething Else?: Do you have an idea for a conversation that would benefit from some dedicated discussion/collaboration before leaving for break? Tell us about it when you register (below)\, and we’ll be in touch about making space for your idea.\n\n12:00-1:30: Davis Grant Lunch (for participants in Season One of the grant) \n1:30-3:30: Faculty “Open Mic:” This will be an opportunity to share works-in-progress\, thoughts about teaching\, plans for the future\, etc.\, in an informal\, supportive environment. If you think you might want to be put on the program\, let us know when you register. (You can also sign up later!) If you need some ideas/prompts to inspire and focus your sharing: \n\nDavis Grant Reflection/Sharing: If you’re a member of Season One\, share a pivotal idea or experience from this summer or fall.\n“What Next?”— particularly for those in our community who are leaving PSU. 😢\n“What is teaching for?” — continue the “Conversations about Teaching” that have been happening this fall\nSeries Reflections: If you’ve been a part of one of our fall series (Public Writing\, Approaches to Generative AI\, or “V” Work Conversations)\, share an important takeaway or something you wrote/created\nColleague Tributes — take a moment to share your gratitude\, respect\, or admiration for a PSU colleague\nSomething else? What book and album would you choose if you were stranded on a desert island? What wicked problem keeps you up at night? What are the three most important things you learned as a college student? Ideas for other prompts? Share them when you register!\n\nAll events will take place in Lamson Library!

SUMMARY:Introduction to Passion-Driven Statistics
DESCRIPTION:Join the CoLab and Lisa Dieker\, professor of social sciences at Wesleyan University\, for this introduction to passion-driven statistics\, a “multidisciplinary\, project-based curriculum that supports students in conducting original research\, asking original questions\, and communicating methods and results using the language of statistics.” \nLisa developed this innovative approach to teaching statistics and will be orienting PSU faculty on how they can use it in their own classes. If you teach courses that already engage students with statistical research or if you’re looking for new ways to inspire student research\, join us for this introduction.

SUMMARY:“V” Work Conversations Series (11/18)
DESCRIPTION:This is a series of three conversations between the CoLab and interested faculty about how we incorporate values\, vibrance\, vulnerability\, visibility\, vision\, and voice into the design of our teaching. \n\n\n\nEach conversation will engage with two of these topics with pre-readings provided by the CoLab to help center the discussion. Expertise in these topics are emergent; no one right now claims to know everything about this work. Rather\, these conversations will be an opportunity for us to define what we mean and begin to discuss approaches and future work. \n\n\n\nParticipants are invited to share their thoughts about this topic in our working document. \n\n\n\nLight breakfast will be provided on 9/29 & 10/29. Light snacks and drinks provided on 11/18.

SUMMARY:Teaching the "Classroomless" Class
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a 60 minute workshop about teaching outside of the confines of a standard classroom. This program is for teaching faculty as well as those of us who teach students through other mechanisms on campus: one-shot drop in visits\, advising\, campus jobs\, etc.\n\nThe CoLab will provide a brief introductory presentation about the major issues surrounding this kind of work. Participants will engage in a conversation about how this kind of teaching fits into the larger landscape of the University\, how it intersects with “traditional” teaching\, and what innovative design practices we could bring to this work to help elevate it.\n\nLunch provided.

SUMMARY:Access and the Poor College: A Conversation with Matt Brim and Danica Savonick
DESCRIPTION:What does “access” mean for underfunded schools? How have inequities in funding shaped scholarship and disciplines? What is the future of education in an ever-more-unequal America? \nWe will be joined by Matt Brim\, author of Poor Queer Studies: Confronting Elitism in the University (Duke University Press\, 2020) and Danica Savonick\, author of Open Admissions: The Poetics and Pedagogy of Toni Cade Bambara\, June Jordan\, Audre Lorde\, and Adrienne Rich in the Era of Free College (Duke University Press\, 2024) to explore these and other questions important for anyone working in public higher education right now. \nCopies of Poor Queer Studies and Open Admissions will be available to in-person attendees on a first-come basis. \nMatt Brim is Professor of Queer Studies in the English department at the College of Staten Island and an affiliate faculty in the Women’s and Gender Studies M.A. Program at the CUNY Graduate Center\, where he is also the Executive Director of CLAGS: The Center for LGBTQ Studies. In addition to Poor Queer Studies\, he is the author of James Baldwin and the Queer Imagination (University of Michigan Press\, 2014) and co-editor of Queer Precarities in and out of Higher Education: Challenging Institutional Structures (coedited with Churnjeet Mahn and Yvette Taylor; Bloomsbury Academic\, 2023)\, Queer Sharing in the Marketized University (coedited with Yvette Taylor and Churnjeet Mahn; Routledge 2023)\, and Imagining Queer Methods (with Amin Ghaziani; NYU Press\, 2019). \nDanica Savonick is an Assistant Professor of English at SUNY Cortland\, where she teaches courses on multicultural and African American literature\, feminist theory\, and digital humanities. In addition to publishing Open Admissions\, she has had research appear in MELUS\, American Literature\, Modern Fiction Studies\, Keywords for Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities\, Digital Humanities Quarterly\, and Hybrid Pedagogy as well as Inside Higher Ed and the Chronicle of Higher Education. She is currently working on a project about the radical writers and artists who taught at Livingston College (part of Rutgers University) in the 1970s. \nOops! We could not locate your form.

SUMMARY:Towards a Poor College: Shaping Our Priorities in an Era of Austerity
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, there are schools with large endowments and immense financial resources … and there are other types of schools such as underfunded regional public universities. The truth is\, most American students go to poor colleges\, not rich ones. Instead of seeing the poor college as a place of lack\, might we find some benefits in such an environment? Drawing on ideas from Virginia Woolf\, Jerzy Grotowski\, and\, especially\, the work of Matt Brim and Danica Savonick\, Matthew Cheney teases out some ideas about what really matters in education and how we might position ourselves as proud members of a poor college movement.
