Overview
As a WRCO class, IDS Senior Seminar involves significant writing experiences that help you explore your IDS program through writing; understand writing as a process and develop your skill at revising; and practice writing for different audiences and purposes.
Requirements
For the Writing Portfolio in this class, you will write and revise three written pieces. Two of these pieces are assigned; the third you may choose.
All of your drafts and final versions should be posted to your ePort — you will submit the link to the piece in Canvas on the due dates.
-
Piece One: Resume
You will write and revise a professional resume. You may start with something you already have or you may start from scratch.
- First Draft: 9/25
- Second Draft: 10/16 (for Career Night!)
- Final Version: 10/30
-
Piece Two: IDS Topical Essay
You will choose one of the topics of investigation we're covering in the first six weeks of the class to write a short (2-3 page) essay about.
- First Draft: 10/2
- Second Draft: 10/23
- Final Version: 11/13
-
Piece Three: Your Choice
You may pick one other piece to revise and edit. It should be related in some way to your IDS major and/or the work of this class. See the list below for possible suggestions.
- First Draft: 10/9
- Second Draft: 11/6
- Final Version: 11/20
Possible Writing Options for "Your Choice"
- Your original IDS essay: Back when you put together your program, you wrote an essay about your major. You may choose to revise this piece for a new audience. Since you no longer need to write for the IDS Council, you’ll have to think about how you could transform your essay into something else about your major for a different audience.
- IDS essay reflection: Re-read your original essay and write a thoughtful reflection about what you imagined your program would be like and how it turned out.
- [YOUR MAJOR] catalog entry: What if PSU were to turn your IDS program into a formal, traditional major? Look at how these are described and detailed in the PSU catalog and write one about your program, including all of the various components that make up a traditional major catalog entry. (Overview, Degree Requirements, Course Sequence, Learning Outcomes, and Career Pathways)
- Cover Letter: Locate a job related to your major that you might apply for. Write a cover letter as though you are really applying.
- Advice to Future IDS Students: Write a piece for future IDS students giving them tips and advice about completing a custom major.
- Something else!: Come up with some other writing assignment/prompt for a particular audience. Talk to me and your classmates if you want to bounce ideas around.
