Introduction to IDS

Open Education

Overview & Introduction

Much of this class is predicated upon philosophies of open education: free and open access to resources, public sharing of knowledge, and connected learning within a network of peers, professionals, and practitioners.ย

While you will get an introduction to these concepts in the weekly work of this class, this module is your opportunity dig deeper into the purpose and practices of open education.ย

At the end, you should be able to discuss the value of open education to you as a learner as well as to educational institutions, more generally.

Module Options

In addition to the introductory assignments/readings on Open Education that the entire class completes in the first half of the semester, choose one of the following larger assignments to complete. (If you don’t like any of the ones listed, propose something else to me.)

No matter which option you choose, make sure you review the readings and resources on this page and supplement them with your own research, as needed.ย

  • Create an infographic about open education, with a particular focus that is interesting to you. For example, you could talk about the history of the movement, different aspects of openness, challenges of open, or the current situation with open education PSU. Share your infographic on your ePort and be prepared to share it in class.ย
  • Write a series of blog posts (on your ePort) that dive deeper into some of the readings on Open Education (see below or look for others). Think of a theme to tie together your blog post series. You could compare different perspectives on open education presented in the readings. You could choose readings from students, faculty, and administrators and discuss how they view the topic similarly/differently. You could develop your own definition and justification for open education and discuss how the readings line up (or diverge) from your viewpoint.ย
  • Develop a resource for future students in Intro to IDS that could help them get oriented to the concept of Open Education. Think about what you struggled with when first introduced to this topic and what would have helped you. This can be in any format you choose (video, Web page, handout, activity idea, etc.) Share your resource on your ePort.ย
  • GROUP OPTION: Host an event in the Open CoLab about Open Education from a students’ perspective. Figure out what you want to happen at this event (presentation, panel discussion, workshop activity, something else) and divvy up responsibilities. Publicize the event on campus, run it, and follow-up asking for feedback from participants. Reflect upon the event in a post on your ePort.ย
