Introduction to
IDS

Introduction to IDS

Overview & Introduction

You will build your own website either via Plymouth Create or another tool of your choice, which we will use as an e-portfolio and workshop space for ideas throughout the course. We call it an ePort because it is more than a portfolio: it is portable, a port of call, and maybe even a port in a storm.

You can control the privacy settings on your ePort, which we will discuss in class, but if you prefer to work in an inherently private setting, please see me to discuss it (you can potentially use Mahara, Moodle, or another tool).

Because this course earns you a TECO credit, you can’t avoid learning the technologies, but we can talk about alternatives if you feel you’d be better served by a different tool.

(Most of the WordPress sites here are from before Plymouth Create existed — if you want to use WordPress, it’s generally best to do it through Plymouth Create)

Individual Assignments

On the way to creating your final ePort, we’ll be completing individual assignments that help to break the entire process down:

  1. Claim Your Domain & Install WordPress: You’ll need to pick a URL for your site and install a tool for building it.
  2. Publish Your Application Assignments: As you complete each of your application work, publish them on your site as new posts.
  3. Explore WordPress: Take some time to learn your way around WordPress and develop some knowledge about how it works.
  4. Customize Your Site: Your site needs to reflect you as a person; spend some time making it your own.
  5. Create an About Page and Choose a License for Your Site: Build a page that introduces you to your audience, and take some time to think about how you want to make your work available on the Web for others to use.
  6. Publish Your Essay: After you’ve submitted your final IDS essay, share it on your site.
  7. Prepare Your Site for Life after Intro: Build the space you’ll need for your future IDS studies. you’ve created that you’d like to share, copy/paste it onto your site and link to it somehow in your menu.
  8. Review your site against the ePort checklist: This is a list of recommendations and best practices that we find useful. Check your site against it and and make sure you’ve addressed everything on it — or make sure you have a reason for not addressing something or doing something differently.
