SUMMARY:Trauma-Informed Pedagogy Series (11/9)
DESCRIPTION:Research on Adverse Childhood Experiences has found that 61% of adults in the US have suffered at least one traumatic childhood experience\, with women and BIPOC at greater risk for four or more such experiences. It is safe to suggest that a majority of our students (and faculty!) carry unhealed trauma that\, even if it does not manifest in a psychological diagnosis\, affects their/our imaginative and emotional lives. Gabor Maté M.D. describes this traumatic material we carry as “explosive\,” sensitive to inadvertent triggers. And this was before 2020. \nWorking on the assumption that most\, if not all of us\, enter the classroom space as carrying this explosive material inside us\, we will explore in this workshop: How do we create and facilitate learning spaces where students (and ourselves) can be safe without necessarily comfortable\, heard and seen without it being a therapy session (which calls for a different training and skillset beyond what faculty have)? What are the practices\, skills\, methods\, and structures that can serve in this time\, where wounds demand a place in our consciousness and teaching\, regardless of whether we want them there or not? \nIn this experiential\, fun and dialogical series of 3 workshops\, we will explore principles and strategies for trauma-informed teaching\, curriculum development and delivery\, so that students are lifted up and we can teach\, as poet/performer Cecilia Vicuña expresses it\, with “healing intent.” \nYou may attend all of these sessions to complete the series\, or come to any one as a stand-alone. \n\nSaturday October 9th\, 10am – 12pm in person\, lunch provided following the program! Location: CoLab\nThursday October 21st\, 5pm – 6pm in person. Location: CoLab\nTuesday November 9th\, 5pm – 6pm virtual\, on Zoom\n\nNOTE THAT THIS FINAL SESSION HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FROM 11/2 TO 11/9! \nOpen to all faculty and staff at PSU. \nOops! SUMMARY:Diversity Equity and Inclusion Workshop: Bias Reduction Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Diversity Equity and Inclusion Workshop Series \nThis 3-part workshop is designed to broadly examine the ways in which individual level and structural level biases impact the PSU community. The first two workshops will focus on practicing social psychology based strategies for mitigating one’s own (implicit and explicit) biases. Workshop 3 will take the form of a discussion about the ways in which systems and structures at PSU could be improved to increase equity and inclusion. The goal of this last workshop is bring members of the campus community together to identify (and begin planning) ways we can make this a more inclusive community. \nYou may attend one\, two or all three workshops and there are no prerequisites for participation.  \nPast session: October 13 4PM – 5PM: Bias Reduction in Higher Education (part 1): Looking out for microaggressions and subtle behaviors. \nNovember 10 4PM – 5PM: Bias Reduction in Higher Education (part 2): Using bias reduction techniques from the social psychology literature. \nDescription: In this workshop\, we’ll identify\, discuss\, and practice 5 bias reduction techniques supported by evidence from the social psychology literature. Techniques discussed include: activation of egalitarian goals\, perspective gaining\, establishing a common group identity\, counter-stereotyping\, and forming implementation intentions. \nDue to the sensitive nature of this discussion\, this is an in-person only event.  \nUpcoming: December 8 4PM – 5PM: Bias Reduction in Higher Education (part 3): Structural sources of bias at PSU. \nDescription: This workshop will focus on biases in the systems at PSU that negatively impact students\, faculty\, and staff from marginalized groups. This workshop is intended to be a discussion\, where were work together to identify potential issues facing PSU. I am aware that these discussions are already happening in a few different communities/groups on campus. My hope is that this discussion will help connect individuals interested in enacting structural change and inform the topics/format of workshops for Spring 2022. This event is hybrid and is open to all faculty and staff.
