SUMMARY:Staff Learning Community Professional Development Kick-Off: (Live Virtual Event)
DESCRIPTION:Lee Skallerup Bessette’s article on the Chronicle of Higher Education\, “The Staff Are Not OK” went viral this last fall and for good reason. Staff have been greatly affected by the changes in our universities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic\, but the national focus has been largely on educators and students. During our kick-off session\, we will talk about staff wellness in the wake of COVID-19. and how this period can inform the longer narrative of our careers. \nFor registration and join information\, navigate to http://psucampuswellnessdays2021.sched.com. SUMMARY:Graveyards of Academe: The Necroliberal University
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by Benjamin Balthaser and Bill V. Mullen’s essay “The Necroliberal University:COVID-19\, racial violence\, and the management of death“\, this event offers us an opportunity to discuss current practices and ideologies of higher education. Necroliberal melds neoliberal with necropolitical\, resulting in a word that suggests the management and administration of death within an environment celebrating freedom\, individualism\, and prosperity. \nBalthaser and Mullen argue that the global pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement have converged to highlight the necroliberalism of universities that now must weigh the danger of the pandemic versus the economic toll of remote work\, that must confront their racialized histories and figure out how to issue institutional statements about systemic racism. The ivory tower has been breached. “For many years\,” Balthaser and Mullen write\, “the university has been imagined as a site removed\, a place in which class\, race\, and social conflict can be managed. That era is over: the madness now has a glossy thirty-page brochure and an ever-increasing death count.” \nFor this discussion\, we will present some of the ideas from the essay\, along with basic explanations of neoliberalism\, necropolitics\, and necroliberalism\, and ask what use such ideas might have (if any) for us as we navigate the new/old world of higher education today. We will also probably make some zombie jokes and occasionally yell out\, “Brains! Brains!” \nDiscussion leaders: Matthew Cheney (Interdisciplinary Studies) and Nic Helms (English) \n \n Request Meeting Link\n \n\n Request Meeting Link \n × \n\nRequest Meeting Link: Graveyards of Academe: The Necroliberal University\n\nName*\n \n First\n \n Last\n \nEmail*\n \n \nFrom your email address\, it looks like you may not be affiliated with Plymouth State University. SUMMARY:Faculty Talk About Course-Sharing
DESCRIPTION:Join Professors Kate Harrington and Robin DeRosa for a guided conversation on the future of course-sharing at Plymouth State and USNH. We will be paying special attention to the possibilities of sharing courses between USNH (and possibly CCSNH) institutions. We will discuss: \n\nhow have our faculty been participating in sharing so far?\nwhat is promising or exciting about the opportunity of course sharing? How could we dream big about this to benefit students and our programs?\nwhat pitfalls or drawbacks or concerns do we have?\nWhat would we need (resources\, processes) if we were going to move forward with any of these ideas?\n\nWe will invite OAA to participate with us and share their perspective\, and notes will be taken and shared with the full faculty and administration. Join us!\n \n Request Meeting Link\n \n\n Request Meeting Link \n × \n\n\nName*\n \n First\n \n Last\n \nEmail*\n \n \nFrom your email address\, it looks like you may not be affiliated with Plymouth State University.
