SUMMARY:Creating a Dynamic Culture That Supports Every Person at PSU
DESCRIPTION:PSU has undergone an incredible amount change as we attempt to create a model 21st century University. As our systems evolve\, it is equally important and necessary to create a matching culture that honors the gifts and unique work of every employee. The Communications Survey helped us see that we have room for growth in this area. This workshop will explore what concrete steps we can take to help create a dynamic culture for every employee. In this workshop\, Prof. Mark Fischler will introduce the research of Belgian Author Frederic Laloux and the 3 hallmarks he identified of leading edge 21st century organizations: self-management\, wholeness\, and evolutionary purpose. \nHosted by Mark Fischler.

SUMMARY:Capstone Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Requested last semester by members of the Provost’s Council. In this session\, we will explore current PSU initiatives in individual academic programs and in General Education to integrate capstone experiences into our curriculum\, and talk about why and how capstones matter to cluster pedagogy and to our students and their learning and goals. We will try to get a read on where we are as a campus with capstone curriculum\, and talk about what next steps the institution should take in developing capstone experiences for our students. \nThis event will be repeated on October 3rd. \nSponsored by Academic Affairs

SUMMARY:Day to Day Democracy: an experiment in student choice
DESCRIPTION:As a means to respond to the daily mood and climate of a course\, Professor Adam Keul has implemented daily votes on curriculum in the “Tackling a Wicked Problem” course. The tactic has already fostered a comfortable rapport and a sense of student solidarity in the course. Adam will gather faculty perspectives as well as report the early results of this experiment during the talk. He will suggest ways that faculty may implement this process even a few classes per semester to respond to students’ needs- especially outside the classroom.

SUMMARY:Advising: A Multiperspectival Approach
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, Prof. Mark Fischler will focus on our advising processes and techniques here at PSU. As Retention becomes even more critical to our very survival the role of effective academic advising is of paramount importance. There are multiple approaches to consider. Let’s explore them together. This will be an interactive workshop so bring your thinking caps as we explore how we can best support our students here at PSU. This is Part One in a two-part Advising series. Part Two will be held in the Spring and be facilitated by Student Success Coach Kelsey Donnelly; it will focus on how our institution facilitates the transition between success coaches and faculty advisors. \nPart One workshop facilitated by Mark Fischler.

SUMMARY:Grade Speculation Calculator Workshop (with Emma Wright)
DESCRIPTION:“What’s my grade?”  The honest answers “It depends” or “It’s complicated” might do more harm than good.  For a student with limited quantitative literacy\, grade weights and conditional grades can be overwhelming.  To help students understand that they have a range of grade possibilities\, we’ve created a Grade Speculation Calculator.  This is a spreadsheet into which students enter their known grades\, and then their totals of points earned and lost are calculated.  Students can also enter speculative grades on future items to see how the results impact their final grades.  Through this\, students learn to optimize their remaining opportunities.\n\nIn this workshop\, we will present example syllabi and their corresponding Grade Speculation Calculators.  We discuss the value of this as both motivation tools and advising tools.  Participants are encouraged to bring their own syllabi to begin developing their own Grade Speculation Calculators. Facilitated by Professor Emma Wright\, Mathematics
