Developmental Writing

Effective College Writing:   

In this course, students will work in small groups to build the fundamental reading and writing skills required for college-level written work. With intensive instruction in all aspects of producing written work, students will work to become comfortable and proficient in the fundamental expectations of college-level written work and become prepared to communicate effectively in writing.  This course will focus on the following components of effective college-level writing:   

  • The Writing Process: Strategies for planning, drafting, revising, and editing. 
  • Sentence and Paragraph Skills: Crafting effective sentences, developing strong topic sentences, and creating well-organized paragraphs. 
  • Essay Structure: The fundamentals of building an essay, including writing thesis statements, introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions. 
  • Rhetorical Forms: Practicing different types of academic writing, such as descriptive narratives, comparison and contrast essays, and argumentative essays. 
  • Research Skills: How to research a topic, evaluate sources, and integrate evidence into writing.

1). Students will establish a writing process that they are comfortable with. 2). students will learn to connect reading and writing in meaningful ways. 3. Students will create a viable review and editing strategy for their written work.
