My Legacy Pedagogy Baggage

In Legacy Pedagogy Baggage, Matthew R Morris reminds us to acknowledge and lay down the pedagogical ‘baggage’ that we carry with us. What is your own ‘legacy pedagogy baggage’?

I think I have a strong understanding of being aware that I need to meet students where they are at, and understanding my limits of what I can do as one person. I think that my “baggage” is the lack of confidence in myself and trying to be superhuman for everyone 24/7. I have to realize that trying to be superhuman for everyone all the time isn’t always helpful, and that not only could I not help someone to the best of my ability, I am also burning myself out. This just happened to me this past week and this week! I need to take time for self care and work on my confidence in my abilities, and to also be aware of when I need to take a break.

What would you need to help you lay it down?

I think I would focus on building connections with others and taking Blue out for students to interact with. This can still help students and build a positive community, but it is not a “burden” to do. I do not have to constantly work past my office hours to make an impact. I can look for smaller opportunities that might be just as helpful to my community.

What would you pick up instead?

Asking for help and being aware of signs that I need to take a break. It is not a good thing to be burnt out, and I need to be committed to a healthy work life balance. It does not help me OR my students if I am burnt out.
