With an eye toward some of the values, mindsets, drawbacks, and affordances discussed in the module, reflect on 3-5 technology tools to put in your toolbox to use in the classroom.
Go to bit.ly/design-forward-tech-tools for inspiration, or to find new tools you’ve never used. Fill your toolbox with those that you’d like to use or further explore. Make a note for each
one about what value or approach to your teaching the tool supports.
| Name of Tool | Notes |
|---|---|
| Canvas | Extremely helpful and many ways. Gives a home base for organizing and distributing class materials. When used effectively it can be a reference point that helps everyone involved stay organized. Downsides: emphasizes one particular way of evaluating work. Guides students to focus on their grades more than their work. Can have the tendency to remove the human from the equation. Use with clear intention and remain vigilant with organization. |
| Microsoft Suite | I much prefer the Microsoft tools over Google even though Google’s online apps function better than Microsoft\\\’s. I used Powerpoint to create all my slides on which I am fully dependent to keep myself organized during course meetings. I attempt to use slides to give students visuals and rarely use them as a means of \\\”depositing information\\\” but rather as a visual assistant to the course work. |
| Padlet | I rarely and sparingly use Padlet but I’m now considering finding ways to weave the various offerings that Padlet provides into my courses. This is primarily because the Padlet visualizations are enticing and make everyone\\\’s input easier to see. I have yet to fully think through how this could work for my courses and why it would be helpful. |
| Markers and Paper | I’m being a bit cheeky here but the directions ask us to discuss tech tools not necessarily DIGITAL tech tools (though it\\\’s implied). But I figure I might as well discuss the material tool that I use. I often provide students with large pieces of paper and a bevy of markers and ask them to diagram out their ideas with each other. I think many of them find the manual working of their ideas in groups a relief and the physicality of drawing together seems to strengthen the group dynamics. |
| Digital Library Resources | EBSCO Host eBooks OERs etc. Are regularly used in TWP as I try to guide students in how to properly use these tools to find information. The unsung hero that I have yet to teach about is Zotero! |
