Design Bite
So in my own personal journey into ID, for my upcoming TWP course, I’m starting to be more intentional and purposeful about my use of technology. One of my main grudges against it in the past is not being familiar enough with it and practicing, researching it before I used it in class. This would often times set me up for a major failure. So this time, I feel ready and am piloting a new assignment using Padlet. I’m asking students to take a 20 minute walk around campus taking photos of what they see that inspires them. I’m sending them off in groups, but the photos taken will be taken from their unique perspective. An angle of a building, plant/flower, monument, groupings of people, etc. When they return, they’re uploading and posting their favorite photo to Padlet with a caption of why it was this photo and what inspired them. Then, their next task is to give their reviews of their classmates photos, like an art gallery review. You may have already guessed, since this is a TWP class, that this is an assignment to practice their Integrated Perspective in a different way, other than talking with one another. I posted these quotes for inspiration:
“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” – Aristotle
“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” – Edgar Degas

I’m hoping this speaks to these students. I feel like I’m meeting them where they’re at, with technology, taking and posting photos, and making comments on their photos of their audience. However, it’s also Integrated Perspective work and coming to understand their peers’ experiences, stories, thoughts, feelings and learning from them. I feel like this activity has the potential to be the “parent sneaking in vegetables into the cookie recipe”. Let’s just hope they don’t take a bite and it’s ALL broccoli! :)
Love to know others thoughts on this pilot activity!!! :)
