Step One
Consider the words and phrases that come to mind when you describe what you think learning should look and feel like. In the space below, record as many words and phrases that come to mind. Do not limit yourself to what you think is acceptable or generally “approved” as words to describe learning.
what I think learning should look at feel like:
joyous, empowered/ empowering, collaborative, boisterous, quiet, contemplative, exciting, on the edge of scary
students working together to apply concepts or solve problems, but also individuals creating their own paths & solutions
laughter
creativity, risk-taking, engaged
synthesis of experience, classroom content, prior learning to create something new or evolve toward new understandings
teacher as guide, a more experienced learner, not necessarily the expert or the one with the knowledge
an unfolding process undertaken together
embracing “not knowing” in order to learn
Step Two
Words that appear on both lists
Words that are all my own
Words that I would add from the document. . .and Why?
| Word | Why |
|---|---|
| I’m usually drawn to words in the “synthesis” and “evaluate” columns | Because they imply a dynamism and energy, the emergence of something new and possibly unexpected |
Words that I disliked from the document. . .and Why?
| Word | Why |
|---|---|
| I’m rarely drawn to the words in the “knowledge” column | They seem staid and stuffy, implying rote repetition rather than stimulation of thoughts or creativity |
