FORMATS AND MODALITIES

Design Forward

Weekly Dispatch: Monday, June 16, 2025

You’re at the half-way mark of our “Formats & Modalities” module folks! Here’s a little litmus test for you: have you spent at least 5 hours on our module so far? If not, that is a sign that you might want to set aside some good time this week to get on track. If you have spent TONS of hours so far I guess my question is do you need me to take you to the beach or something, because I can if that’s helpful!

Some stuff I have loved in our module so far:

  • Brad and Melissa and I had some annotational chatter in the sidebar of “The Landscape of Merging Modalities” about what modality definitions PSU uses, and what modalities PSU encourages and discourages. There may be a disconnect between what we learn and explore in the CoLab and how our admin talks to faculty about teaching in/with multiple modalities. Hmmm.
  • Some great conversation in the Questions area about teaching with Zoom (ok with TEAMS…yeah we know, we know). Kate fondly reminiscing through her “mild-PTSD from teaching during COVID with half my students in the room and half on zoom.”
  • Chris is killing it on the portfolio reflections and activities. I really liked this one (which he calls “spicy” ha ha) about asynchronous teaching…really about the role of synchronicity in teaching and learning in general. Great stuff.

This week

  1. Take about 10 minutes to look at our second module topic, “Why Does Modality Matter?” and view Martha’s video there if you haven’t already.
  2. Read Chapter 1 of the “Manifesto for Teaching Online” from our Resources page. Annotate in Hypothesis, or you can choose to read the chapter in the hard copy that we gave you of this book and just make a portfolio post about your thoughts!
  3. I tried to do the “Imagining Classrooms” activity from our Activity page and I froze!!! Melissa’s is GREAT! Fundamentally, I DON’T DRAW STUFF. But I am going to try it this week and not worry about my lack of visual creativity…
  4. Enjoy poking around and commenting on your colleagues’ stuff. It’s easy to see the action from our Home Page, or check out that Notifications bell in the top toolbar.

Hope you all are enjoying summer. I enjoy the humor and creativity with which you are approaching your thinking, and hope everyone is feeling happy to be connected!
