Welcome to July and welcome to Designing for Education! We hope this month will be an opportunity for all of us to work together toward a better understanding of what design means in the context of higher ed. As you get started, we encourage you to check out the topic, Lessons From and About Traditional ID. The slides draw on some of our readings this month and hopefully offer some provocation and food for thought. From there, you might jump into the conversation about what “design” means for us as educators.
If you’re looking for a reading to get started, I’d encourage you to check out Hannah Mallon’s Militaristic Origins, Power, and Faux-Neutrality and Travelling in Troy With an Instructional Designer by Jonan Phillip Donaldson. Hannah really dives into instructional design’s origin stories that we need to understand and contend with, while Jonans’ piece considers what happens when ID butts up against constructionist perspectives on education.
Finally, don’t forget activities! These are a great way to practice and share what you’re learning through the rest of module. This week, you might try Connecting the Design Dots, and consider how your June module work might inform your understanding of instructional design. Or, take a stab at rethinking or reframing a traditional ID framework.
These are all just suggestions, though! Feel free to explore whatever topic, questions, resources, or activities that resonate with you this week! We’re excited to be all “back together” this month for this module and we can’t wait to continue learning, sharing, and conversing with you all.
