Advice on choosing tools for academic projects

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

  1. If you are building a site for a class, check with your professor first because they may have a particular space they want you to work in. As a student at PSU, you have access to PlymouthCreate, a platform for building your own websites.
  2. You can get started by going to PlymouthCreate.net and selecting “Get Started.”
  3. Building your own website is a great way to publish course projects and create a lasting web presence and ePortfolio that can be used beyond PSU.
  4. On PlymouthCreate you have options to install many different kinds of website tools, including WordPress, Mediawiki, and Omeka.
  5. The tool you choose to build your website depends on the kind of website you are trying to build.

ADDITIONAL TIPS
  1. The skills you develop building your own site can make you more marketable and attractive to future employers.
  2. If you build an online portfolio at your site, you can add it to your resume.
  3. If you use PlymouthCreate, when you graduate you can choose if you want to take your site and content with you.
  4. On PlymouthCreate, most students build sites with WordPress; sometimes they prefer to use a commercial tool like Wix or Weebly which they’re already familiar with.
